There are actually 2 temple, one lies on the rock and the other is on the edge of the cliff. Tanah Lot Temple is located on the sea separated with the land. Around the temple there are also some smaller and bigger temples like Pekendungan Temple. On the bottom of the cliff there are many holly black white snakes. You can hold those snakes but not for hurt since they are believed as the temple’s guardian created by Dang Kahyangan from his scarf.

Another attraction from Tanah Lot Temple is holly water source called Tirta Pabersihan, it is purified by Hinduism in Bali. The water source is located below and south Tanah Lot Temple.

Tanah Lot Temple  is establishe in XV century by Brahmana “Pedanda Bawu Rawuh” or Danghyang Nirartha from Majapahit kingdom in Java. He succeed brought Hinduism in Bali.

While Danghyang Nirartha succesfully gathered many fellowship, then the authority Bendesa Beraben became jeaulous and sent out Danghyang Nirartha from Tanah Lot. Next Danghyang Nirartha leaved Tanah Lot with one condition that he allowed to moved the rock in to the middle of the sea and build a temple. Tanah Lot meaning land on the sea.

Also he turn his syal into snakes as temple’s guardian too and they watch the Tanah Lot Temple until now. The snakes include to sea snakes with black and yellow, also has 3 stronger poison than cobra. At last Bendesa Beraben follow Danghyang Nirartha.
